A New 'Disk to Disk' Backup Solution for IBM Users

Ashwood Computer President Rod Owens announced today that Ashwood is providing FastBac, a customized Backup Configuration Solution, designed specifically for IBM Unidata or Universe database users. Ashwood utilizes FastBac to provide U2 user sites with a low overhead method of acquiring fast and accurate data back-ups and restores, regardless of the time of day.

"A common problem with other backup solutions is they backup the U2 applications while the U2 database is still operating," Rod explained. "When this occurs there is a high probability working files are being backed-up, and when these files are restored, they often appear as corrupted. No one wants to restore a corrupted file." Ashwood Computer and FastBac resolve these problems for all U2 sites, including those operating on a 24/7 production schedule.

The FastBac Solution Includes:

  • Comprehensive Review of Your Current Backup Procedures
  • Update of Your Operating System to a Recommended Level
  • Update of Your Disk Configuration
  • Update of Your U2 to a Recommended Revision Level
  • Customized Shell Scripts for Your Worry Free Backups

IBM to market and sell BlueFinitys mv.NET.

BlueFinity International Limited announced an agreement with IBM that will allow IBM to market and sell BlueFinity’s flagship product, mv.NET.

Under the agreement, IBM will develop, market and sell an IBM version of mv.NET through its sales force, as well as offer the product through its widely established network of VARs and OEM partners. The agreement enables IBM to receive mv.NET source code for integration with its UniData and UniVerse (U2) data server environments, develop an IBM version of the product, and fully support its customer base.

"Customers will immediately benefit from our ability to leverage mv.NET technology to deliver a tool that will facilitate development of .NET-based solutions for the U2 data servers," said Susie Siegesmund, Director of U2 Data Services for IBM. "This will open up opportunities for existing U2 customers to create .NET-based interfaces to their extended-relational data servers and help facilitate development of new innovative business applications."

mv.NET is a comprehensive solution for accessing MultiValue databases from within Microsoft's .NET environment. It enables software designers to combine the power and flexibility of proven MultiValue technology with the feature rich .NET environment.

"The mv.NET products from BlueFinity are currently attracting considerable attention as they are introduced to markets around the world. This partnership will help accelerate the introduction of mv.NET, particularly into IBM’s established customer base and distribution channels," said Pete Loveless, General Manager of BlueFinity. "The synergy between our respective product lines and target markets makes this relationship a natural fit."

Revelation Software releases Universal Driver Heavy (UDH)

Revelation Software is proud to announce the release of Universal Driver Heavy (UDH) release 3.1 as part of their network product suite.

The Universal Driver Heavy is client/server software designed to allow real-time mirroring of Revelation Linear Hash data. It will automatically replicate data from a primary server to a secondary server. The UDH also allow administrators to monitor active locks and users within the system, release those locks if necessary, and put the primary server into journaling mode so that the secondary can be backed up quickly. It is designed to handle intensive Revelation applications that need to scale up and have high availability.

"UDH ensures the integrity of your application and your data," said Kevin Ruane, IT Director of Revelation Software. "We have designed UDH for the business where down-time is intolerable."

The 3.1 release of The Universal Driver Heavy is for Windows-based platforms only. For more information about Universal Driver Heavy (UDH), Revelation Solution Partner Program, or Network Training classes at Revelation Headquarters, go to www.revelation.com or give us a call at 800-262-4747.

  Tech Tip

Have your web developers been asking you how to access U2 data from PHP?  If so, then you may find that it is easier than you think.  IBM has published two articles, with source code, explaining how to access UniVerse and UniData (U2) files and programs from PHP.

If you would like to program your website in PHP, take a look at the following articles:

Write a PHP Data Objects Driver for U2, Part 1

Write PHP Applications to Access U2 Data, Part 2
