Oxbow Launches Oxbow EMR System Built on InterSystems CACHÉ Object Database

InterSystems Corporation announced that Oxbow, an InterSystems application partner, has introduced the Oxbow EMR system. With the InterSystems CACHÉ® high-performance object database as its foundation, the Oxbow EMR is specifically designed to enable optimal primary care practice management.

The global leader in software for connected healthcare, InterSystems develops and markets innovative database, integration, and business intelligence products. Oxbow, based in Laramie, Wyo., is composed of a team of practicing primary care physicians, IT specialists and security experts focused on providing family practice physicians and small healthcare practices with real-time, easily usable, cost-effective practice management automation.

Quality of Care—EMR Benefits Without Compromise

The Oxbow EMR stands out by enabling improved quality of care via an EMR that's easily usable in a practical way by busy family practitioners, according to Dr. Shawn Moyer, President of Oxbow. "There are literally hundreds of EMR systems available, but primary care physicians always had to compromise between the functionality provided by the application and the time required to work with the EMR, which cut into the time that can be spent with the patient," he said.  "I know of physicians who spent as much as $100,000 for an EMR system and then went back to paper because the system required entirely too much time to use effectively."

The CACHÉ-based Oxbow EMR, in sharp contrast, provides all of the functionality expected from an EMR with a low user time investment. Leveraging multiple patent-pending technologies, the Oxbow EMR delivers real-time decision support, automatic documentation of notes and screenings, drug-drug interaction and allergy alerts, electronic prescriptions and virtually any information tied to patient age, gender and medical history that will be useful to quality care delivery by the family physician.

"The vast majority of EMR systems were developed with a focus on billing rather than on clinical care delivery," Moyer said. "Our product is based on improving the quality of care and quality of life for the physician," he explained. "Using it in my own practice, by the time I leave the room with the patient, I have already done everything needed with that patient. That includes all the notes and codes needed to submit the bill, any future follow-up, required labs, prescriptions sent to the pharmacy, etc. I no longer need to work for hours at the end of every day catching up on my notes. That means more time for each patient and I can finally complete all my work on time."

The high performance of InterSystems CACHÉ combined with its rapid application development environment and automated systems management functionality complement the advanced features of the Oxbow EMR. "We are very pleased with the performance and reliability of CACHÉ," Moyer noted. "And, the minimum maintenance and hardware requirements of the CACHÉ platform contribute to the ability to make the Oxbow EMR available at a very reasonable monthly price point with no upfront fees," he said.

"With just a few mouse clicks, I can see at any time how my practice is performing compared with regional and national standards in terms of chronic care, whether I've recommended proper tests and lifestyle changes, and so on," Moyer continued. "I can also construct a query in literally seconds that truly changes how I am able to practice medicine. As an example, when a limited number of H1N1 flu vaccines became available to one of our practices recently, they were able to create a new query and identify all of the high priority patients. The patients were notified by the end of the same day. I've never seen any other system that would let physicians do anything like this."

"It's an example," Moyer said, "of the physician-supporting capabilities that CACHÉ helps to enable in this real-time aggregate patient data analysis and simple query system."

"We are pleased to work with Oxbow to provide an EMR software product developed specifically for the unique requirements of primary care family physicians," said Robert Nagle, InterSystems Vice President of Software Development. "The Oxbow EMR is another illustration of how InterSystems application partners are addressing the needs of healthcare providers across the industry spectrum."
